A set of 20 medals which depict each of the various stages of the Apollo moon mission were minted in 1970. A total of 4,967 sets were issued containing silver that was thought to have been carried around the moon. After learning this to be incorrect, The Franklin mint requested the subscribers to return their medals for destruction. The replacement medals were struck from a special lot of silver containing metal that was personally carried by the astronauts around the moon. A total of 3,698 of the original sets have been returned for replacement. A small horizontal line was added above the mintmark to distinguish the replacement medals from the originals.
Each medal is 32 millimeters in diameter.
