Complete set of 50 hand enameled ingots, each measuring app. 1.75" X 1.125". The box measures 26" x 12".
During the golden days of the railroads, the last half of the 19the century, hundreds of steel ribbons stretched their way inland from the Atlantic and Pacific tying America together. Always in the spotlight of railroading, always there when railroading history was made were the railroad's emblems, emblazoned in bright, stylish designs. Like banners, these emblems heralded the passing of the train to admiring onlookers. To the employees, these emblems became an object of dedication and pride. These identifying emblems, their coat-of-arms, symbolized the tradition, the adventures and the romantic past of railroading.
The mint in cooperation with the management of the 50 greatest American railroads is paying tribute to the history of railroading by issuing this collection of 50 hand-enameled, sterling silver ingots. Each ingot bears an authentic and true re-creation of the emblem design of one of the great American railroads, deeply recessed into the surface of the ingot. Each emblem design is individually hand-painted with rich enamel colors, and each of these colors is applied separately, one by one. Many of the ingots are embellished with 24KT gold.
